Filming day 1 (Band)

Below is the running order of the day when we filmed the band for our music video along with images of what Alex did during the day when filming the band:

2:00-3:00pm:

At this time we set out to pick up all the members of the cast needed for the band. Along with this all of the equipment had to be loaded into the car and taken down to the location, which was the Cinnamon Club in Altrincham, which was the venue which I was able to organise. The location was booked for 3pm and therefore we had to get there on time as we also had only around 1 hour at the location to get all of the shots that we needed. But we did collect all the people as we picked up my cousin who knew who to play the guitar along with me and so we were able to make the performance look as real as possible.

3:00pm-4:00pm:

At this time we had gathered everybody and had to unload the equipment which we did do by around 3:10pm and so were set up to go from there. Alex then planned out his shots and told us in the band what he wanted us to do. Alex took many shots from all the way at the back of the building too close ups of band members faces. Alex took around 3/4 shots of the band playing the whole song from different angles so we had shots to cut back to if the close ups were not what we wanted. At the set we could also use the lighting equipment and dry-eyes and so we used this to full effect and we changed the lighting as the song changed as this is often seen in Alternative Rock live performances.

4:00pm:

After we had finished filming we uploaded the content onto Alex's computer and looked through it to too see the shots and if they were effective and therefore would be good to edit and we decided that they would be and so now we will need to film the narrative and fit it into the live performance shots.

Final cut pro X research

Here is a prezi of the techniques which I will attempt to use on prezi when editing the video based on the key aspects which are involved in a music video:

This research is very helpful as it will allow for me to be able to go into editing the project with knowledge of what I am going to do and how to do it and therefore I will be able to edit the project by using new ideas which I didn't use last year and expand my knowledge of the editing software.

Shot list

Below are example images of the shots which I am planning to do in my section of the video as well as descriptions of what will happen in the shot, this will help me in creating the product as I will be able to plan out my section so that I can go into filming with a good idea of what I want to film during my section of the narrative. I will give myself the opportunity to change shots I have planned out as I will film things from multiple angles but this is a demonstration of the main shots that I want in my section of the narrative.

Title experiments- Digipak Research

Along with making the product we must also make and artist and so we will have to think of an band name for the band in the video, for this we have though many ideas and narrowed it down too 3 key possible names for the band and from these we will decide one which will be the name of the band in the end:

Mirage-
The band may be called this as it is a name which connotes confusion and dreams and the band could therefore be saying that they want to be successful and this is currently in their imagination/ a mirage but could come true.

Image result for mirage
Omnipotent-
This can link closely into the idea of calling the band Mirage as it to be omnipotent means to be all powerful and so the word could describe the bands ideas as they want to be all powerful and take over the Alternative rock music scene.

Image result for omnipotent
The Disruption-
This relates again to the previous ideas as it could suggest how the band want to take over the Alternative rock scene and "disrupt" it so that they will become the most popular band in the genre.

Image result for disruption

Overall we think these our our best name ideas for the band but are unsure on which name we will give the band as of yet so will have to decide but this research has helped us to narrow down the ideas by looking at the definitions of the words and think why the band would be called this and so have come up with these 3 choices so far.

Narrative

We have decided that our narrative will be about the relationship between a man and a Manikin as we had issues with casting however we feel like it would give the video more of a fun twist to it and allow us to be more inventive.

Here is a video of me describing the narrative:

Changing the narrative

Due to issues with casting we have had to change the narrative which we were originally going to chose and do our back up narrative which will revolve around a similar idea but will involve the man and a mannequin as many people were not keep on being the female character in the video however we feel like this idea give us an opportunity to experiment more and if we can film it how we want it will give the video a comedic edge as the video will not be so serious which when listening to the song we can see how it can be interpreted to be more light hearted. We have see this more relaxed and fun edge to many alternative rock videos such as the song "cant stop" by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Clothing-
There will be no change in the clothing worn by the characters as the mise en scene of the video will be very similar, we will have the manneqin character wear smart casual clothing like jeans which will represent it as a female character due to the clothes being relatively bright, the male character will wear dark coloured clothes to conform to the convention of the genre as this is the typical clothing which is worn in alternative rock video's.

Narrative-
We will use the original narrative idea of a man and a woman but we will most likely change some of our original shot ideas as we have the opportunity to do so to give the video more of a funny edge to it. The idea will be about a couple but with the twist that the woman is a mannequin and therefore we can use more inventive shot types which we were unable to use in our project last year or in our original plan.

Filming Schedule

Band (26th November)
Narrative (9th December)
3pm-4pm: We will arrive at the location at 3pm as this is the time when we are allowed to film at and so we will take as little time as possible setting up the equipment; we will film most of the band in this time as we will have the band play lots of times and then will film the band from all different angles and add them all together. Alex is filming the band section of the video and will take shot of close ups on the instruments and faces of the band members as well as wide shots showing the whole band as these are the most commonly seen shot types when filming an Alternative Rock video.
When we film the bad we will play the song in the background to that both the playing of the instruments and the lip-syncing is matched as well as it can be.
4pm-5pm: Depending on how much time we have we will most likely spend this time doing more sun through from as many different angles and we will re film the band on an Iphone as a back-up as we currently plan to film on an older camera to give the video more of an Alternative Rock look and also be relatable for the audience watching the video.
11:00pm-11:30pm: We will get everything set up and talk to the cast to talk them what will happen and describe what it is they will want to do.
11:30-1:00: For this time, we will film Bayley’s part of the narrative as he will film the narrative for half of the song and so will use the shots he has planned out which will depict a narrative of the couple having an argument before they make up and then he will show them getting along. He will film up to just before the 2nd chorus of the song and that is where I will take over and film my part of the narrative.
1:30-3:00: After Bayley has filmed his section of the narrative I will film mine which will show the children getting along and this will be through them watching TV together and going playing, the bridge of the song will begin and this will demonstrate a disequilibrium as the child will lose the toy train and they will fall out with each other before the song reverts back to the chorus when the two kids will walk away from each other.

Location Research

Below are images of the places where we will both film footage of the band and of the narrative to the video and descriptions as to why we think these locations are the best places to film the footage. This is useful as we now know where the best place is to film based on the locations we have looked and and therefore the ways to make the best video we can. For our locations for the band if we chose the band to be filmed on a stage we will film them on the Bowdon Rooms in Altrincham if we get access to the stage. :

How we will represent our characters and band

From our research into the Arctic Monkeys we can see how they are represented across different media forms including live performances and and how they represent characters in the music videos. From this we have seen that they portray a image of being relatable from the way they act and the mise en scene of the video's and live performance, this will therefore show how we modelled the band on the Arctic Monkeys and this is because of their success in using this look and so we will model our artist on this look. We will attempt to capture in our music video through the clothing which we chose for the people in the band to wear. We are not yet fully decided on if the characters will wear a long sleeved or short sleeved shirt but more likely it will be short sleeved as that is how the Arctic Monkeys dress in most of the live performances.

The fact that the band will wear dark clothes is because the dark clothing creates the idea that the band are more mysterious and this is one of the key ideas surrounding the genre as it is alternative rock and therefore is music which is different from the norm and hard to identify just what it is and so with the band wearing dark coloured clothes to represent themselves they will demonstrate this mysterious look which is something applied to the whole genre not just our video.
Alternative rock attempts to look into the social and political issue of the world we live in as seen in songs such as "Bitter sweet symphony" by The Verve or Nirvana's "Smells like teen spirit" along with many other songs by multiple bands within the genre. This is mostly represented by the clothes that the bands wear as they mostly wear clothes which are more relatable e.g. jeans and a T-Shirt and that is why the band in our music video will also wear these clothes as it is a representation of the band trying to connect with the listeners as they are showing how they are similar to them.
The way that the bands dress helped them to gain popularity therefore as people will want to listen to them are they can relate to them and this is why we will give the band this look when we shown them preforming in the music video.

Talent release form

Below is a picture of the talent release form that we will have all of the people who are participating in our music video sign as it will demonstrate that we have permission form them for them to be in the music video and therefore we will have a cast for the characters and band members in our video:
