Comparison of genres

Video:

Alternative rock- It is often set in 2 places, one where the band is performing and one where the action is taking place. They also usually were dark clothing. Most often the cuts match the beat and the speed of the editing matches the narrative. The video often contains a narrative which links into the lyrics, the video often depicts good and bad settings. This is represented in the video for Mr Brightside by the Killers which is attached below as we can see the band perform and mostly the cuts match the beat, they are also using dark clothing for the most part and the narrative has relevance to the lyrics:




House- There is often images of sexuality, clubbing, clubs, people dancing and jumping around and there is often a wild and crazy atmosphere. The narrative of the video is often just something just to watch and not linked into the lyrics. This is represented in the music video for the song "so frekin tight" which represents this upbeat dancing theme, with a crazy atmosphere also being shown in the video:



Lyrics/Music:

Alternative rock- The songs usually have many lyrics and they have a verse and chorus which are repeated most often the lyrics differ in each verse. The band will also use and electric guitar, drum kit, base, guitar and an acoustic guitar from time to time and also there is often some sound of precusion in the background as well as the drums. This is applied in the Mr Brightside video as there is the use of all of the typical instruments that should be used in Alternative Rock are being used and the song structure matches the typical structure as well.  

House- Usually the music is too a 4/4 beat with few lyrics, mainly just a chorus and a verse which are repeated (often within themselves). It also usually contains a synthesised baseline.

Comparison

Me and the rest of the group think that it is best that we chose Alternative Rock as our genre as it is the best choice for what we want to/ can do:

House	·         We will be able to incorporate many different editing techniques for the video, this is shown in the video "so frekin tight we can see how there are different cuts and shot types as well as many other inventive editing techniques and transitions.  ·         It will allow for us to stretch the way we make the video as we can have many interesting shot types, once again the video demonstrates this as we can see how there has been the use of inventive shot types as we can see many tracking shots and high angle shots used to create the video.	·         There are few lyrics and therefore it will be hard to match the lyrics with the video as although the video is usually just something to watch it will have to have some relation, this is shown in the video as the visuals do not match the lyrics of the song and therefore we will not be able to apply any narrative theory effectively to the video.
Alternative Rock	·         There are many lyrics and       therefore it will be easy to match the video to the lyrics that are in the song, we can see this as the Todorov narrative theory is applied to the lyrics but is a slightly different way and this can be often see in Alternative Rock video's and therefore we will attempt to do this in our video.  ·         We can still have the possibility to stretch what we do in the video, we can see this in Mr Brightside as there is also the use of inventive shot types such as tracking shots and many different transitions which we will attempt to apply to our video.	We possibly cannot use as much inventive editing techniques in our video or shot types, in house music videos there are often lots of quick transitions which would allow for us to be more creative in the shot types we use and we will possibly be more restricted when making an alternative rock video.
